The Dangers of Mold and How to Avoid It
July 1, 2023

Mold is a prevalent issue that can fill homes and other buildings and is common in humid South Louisiana. It thrives in damp places, like around a leak in a roof, windows, or pipes. However, it can also grow in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, and carpet. Mold can enter an inside environment through open doors, windows, vents, and air conditioning systems. If there’s mold in the outside air, it can attach itself to clothing, shoes, and even your pets.

Identifying a mold problem is crucial to take appropriate action. One of the signs is a distinct musty smell. In a more severe case of mold growth, you can see mold patches growing. People that are exposed to moldy environments may experience stuffy noses, wheezing, and red or itchy eyes. In more extreme cases, you may experience fever and shortness of breath.

Some tips to keep mold out of homes and buildings are to control the humidity levels, fix leaks quickly, thoroughly clean and dry after flooding, turn on ventilation systems while showering, and maintain a clean environment.
